Hang Your Hat

When you’re away from home, nothing can evoke that comforting feeling like a great meal. The Greenwood Inn and Suites not only offers 213 rooms in which to lay your head, but also fine food to warm your heart.

Daltons Restaurant, which opened in 2000 with the hotel, has that inviting cottage feel, with heavy wood doors, a stone fireplace and unique, metal lights that would adorn a rustic dock. The menu is equally as warm, featuring the foods of comfort for those weary travellers that miss home, including shepherd’s pie, baked onion soup and a hearty steak sandwich.

Executive Chef Michael Keeler takes inspiration from regional, seasonal ingredients to create hearty dishes such as Manitoba pickerel, Crown Royal baby back ribs and a bison burger with New Bothwell horseradish cheddar cheese. He also likes to add a new twist to comforting favourites, such as pork chops, and turn them into a unique dining experience – blueberry pork chops.

The restaurant also features a fine-tuned seasonal menu, which is the result of a collaborative effort between the head chefs of the three Greenwood properties (Winnipeg, Calgary and Edmonton). Cherry Ann Chandler, regional food and beverage director for the properties says it’s an interesting endeavour since regional, season items can be quite varied between the two provinces.

One thing all three restaurants can agree on is healthy options – something their customers, no matter the city, have been requesting. Daltons’ menu, which is updated annually, recently began featuring “Your Health, Your Way” options. These better-for-you items, such as Thai spring rolls, and chili lime tilapia, highlight the nutritional information below to ensure customers are not straying too far from their diet plans while travelling.

But, the hotel restaurant serves not just the travelling type. Chandler says their lunch buffets, popular with workers in the area, and event buffets (Mother’s Day, Easter, Thanksgiving, etc...) are well-attended.

The chefs and staff at Daltons not only fill their customers’ stomachs, but they also aim to stop hunger across the city. The Greenwood Inn and Suites partners with Winnipeg Harvest through events such as a wedding show where attendees are asked to bring a canned, nonperishable food item or a cash donation as admission.

They also work with the Boys and Girls Club of Winnipeg on a summer lunch program. Chefs from Daltons prepare a sandwich lunch, complete with fruit, juice and dessert, for 150 kids, Monday through Friday during the summer months.

Chandler says they hope to do more within the community to provide quality food. She points to the lot behind the hotel, which the Greenwood owns. There’s talk of turning it into a community garden that would produce food for Winnipeg Harvest, local people and herbs to use in Daltons kitchen.

“The community garden would be another step in the Greenwood’s ‘green’ initiatives, which already includes an extensive recycling and compost plan,” she says. Chandler states that going green is especially important since the hotel hosts numerous events, from conferences to weddings.

The conference centre/event hall is 8,400 square feet and can fit 300 people comfortably. Chandler says the restaurant and catering chefs are more than happy to work with clients to tailor event menus to suit their style, whether it be simple fruit and cheese sampling or fullcourse buffet.

daltons3For smaller events, the hotel boasts eight “break out” rooms – three with dance floors, and all but one with totally natural lighting. The hotel has also partnered with Inland Audio Visual to ensure all technology needs are covered.  After a day at a conference, or for a nice Sunday brunch, Daltons Restaurant opens its inviting doors so customers can come hang their hat.
